Formulation and Antifungal Activity Test of Durian Peel Extract Powder against Malassezia furfur

Durian (Durio zibethinus Murr.) peel waste remains underutilized, despite containing flavonoid, tannin, alkaloid, and saponin compounds with potential antifungal activity. Malassezia furfur is a fungus commonly responsible for tinea versicolor in humans. This study aimed to formulate an ethanol extract of the inner durian peel into a powder preparation and to evaluate its antifungal activity against Malassezia furfur. The extract was obtained by maceration using 96% ethanol and formulated into a powder at concentrations of 7%, 9%, and 11% (F1, F2, F3), together with a negative control without extract (K-) and a positive control of mycorin powder (K+). Evaluation included organoleptic, homogeneity, fineness, pH, irritation, and hedonic tests performed before and after a six-cycle stability (cycling) test, followed by an antifungal activity test using the disc diffusion method, analyzed using the Paired Sample T-Test and one-way ANOVA. The extraction yield was 2.97%. All powder formulas remained physically stable, homogeneous, finely textured, non-irritating, and had a pH of 5.1-6.2, compatible with normal skin pH. The antifungal test showed mean inhibition zone diameters of 11.4 mm (F1), 11.7 mm (F2), and 12.6 mm (F3), all classified as strong, while the negative control showed no inhibition zone. It can be concluded that ethanol extract of inner durian peel can be formulated into a physically stable powder with antifungal activity against Malassezia furfur, with the 11% concentration providing the strongest inhibition.
